Guys do this because they’re assholes, they probably found someone else to talk to or they just got bored of talking to you and they’re to scared to actually tell you. So it’s “easier” to just cut you off. You shouldn’t be talking to guys like that anyway. Those are the guys that will break your heart.

You could be shy but wouldn’t you rather want to know. It seems like you guys are comfortable enough with each other to be open with things like that. I say go for it :)

The best way to know quick is just to ask. But clues are flirting, teasing, if he texts you a lot. He could be shy though so again your best bet is to just ask :)

Well if you barely know him asking him to the school dance shouldn’t be your first option, get to know him first in another setting. Like go hang out somewhere else get something to eat. Because asking him to the dance might feel awkward for him so if you have a crush on him the best way to get to know him is on your own time. I think you shouldn’t be shy and you should still text him because then he will know you are interested. If the school dance is far away then maybe you have time to get to know him better and then you can ask him but if its too soon and you give him no warning before hand then you should wait it out.
